This is a reproduction of the pre-war Schutzmütze or panzer beret worn by Wehrmacht panzertruppen during the early campaigns in Poland, Denmark, Norway and France.
This type of headgear was unpopular and was quickly phased out in 1940 in favor of field caps made to the same cut as the standard M34 cap but in black wool with a pink soutache to indicate armor branch.
Original panzer berets consisted of a felt crash pad with an oilcloth sweatband and a removable cover in the shape of a beret with branch insignia (in this case a white on black BeVo eagle and wreath and cockade). The design was revisited after the war by the Bundeswehr who adopted a similar piece of headgear for their armored troops. This replica is a postwar Bundeswehr crash pad with a reproduction beret cover by GD43 with professionally applied high quality insignia.
These reproductions are very scarce.
