This is an original World War I vintage M16 helmet. These helmets were adopted in 1916 out of a desire to minimize artillery fire casualties.
The paint on this helmet is original to the Great War. This helmet is a 66 made by make Si (Eisenhütte Silesia).
When introduced in 1916 these helmets featured leather liner bands with leather pads. The leather was prone to deforming under field conditions and so was replaced in 1917 with a metal band. These helmets are sometimes referred to as “M17” helmets.
The liner band is definitely original although I believe the pads may not be. The split pins may not be original either. Nice piece with a nice patina.
